Accidental deposit scams are on the rise. These scams occur when a cybercriminal “accidentally” sends money to a user’s payment app like Venmo. The scammer then messages the user, asking them to return the accidental payment. If the user interacts with the scammer and sends the money back, they might become part of the scammer’s money laundering scheme, using these payment apps to take money from hacked bank accounts. Users should resolve these issues with the payment company’s customer service instead of interacting with the potential scammer.
